when i was young, about 7 or 8, my neighbor planted flowers. a few petunias and pansies, mostly.
because i thought that flowers were for everyone, i picked some and set up a flower stand at the end of my driveway.
i taped these little poseys with scotch tape and rested them in small glasses of water.
my neighbor came home and sweetly bought back a tiny bouquet of his flowers for $1. i could tell that he was a little confused, but still very good-natured about it all.
it was my only sale that day, but i planted that dollar bill at the foot of our garden.
that dollar, though questionably earned, has nourished the soil and the springtails and mycorrhizae and all the other beings that help compost the old into what is emergent and yet to come.
